The Lakers continued to build in the 1970’s when they acquired Kareem Abdul – Jabbar from the Milwaukee Bucks. That was the first piece of what would become the “Showtime” teams for the Lakers. In 1979, the Lakers drafted Magic Johnson as another piece of the puzzle. Pat Riley became the head coach in 1981 and the Lakers drafted James Worthy in 1982. From 1982 to 1989, the Lakers would win 4 Championships and define themselves as one of the best teams the NBA has ever seen. Fans rushed to collect the jerseys of Magic, Kareem and JW. People also collected signed hats and signed basketballs. There was no end to the great memorabilia generated by the “Showtime” years.
Times would be tough for the Lakers until 1996 when they would acquire two of the greatest players ever to wear a Los Angeles Lakers jersey. The Lakers traded for high school standout Kobe Bryant and acquired the huge presence of Shaquille O’Neal. They also drafted Derek Fisher and traded for James Horry. Lakers fans knew that something special was happening. The Lakers then hired former Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson and the rebuilding of the Lakers was complete. In five years, the Lakers would win 3 more titles and create new memories for a new generation of Lakers fans. Everyone in Los Angeles seemed to have a Shaq and Kobe jersey. Signed memorabilia was selling at a rapid pace.
In the coming years, things would change for the Lakers. Shaq would leave for Miami and Phil Jackson would leave and return. The Lakers would however return to the NBA finals and win 2 more titles. And despite his unpopularity among many fans, Kobe Bryant memorabilia would continue to be a big seller.
